Crop Insurance Scheme Should Be Implemented as Soon as Possible: MLA Shopian Shabir Ahmad Kullay

During the general election campaign, major political parties, as well as independent candidates, had promised to implement a crop insurance scheme for apple farmers. It was stated at the time that efforts would be made to pressure the government into implementing this scheme by March 2025. However, despite these assurances, no discussions on the matter have taken place, either inside or outside the assembly.MLA Shopian Shabir Ahmad Kullay has now urged the administration to expedite the implementation of the crop insurance scheme, emphasizing the urgent need to protect apple farmers from unpredictable weather conditions. It is important to note that for several years, farmers in Shopian and other districts have suffered heavy losses due to hailstorms and untimely snowfall. These natural calamities have significantly damaged apple orchards, leaving many farmers financially burdened. A large number of them have taken loans under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme from Jammu and Kashmir Bank and are now struggling with debt.Farmers have been consistently demanding the implementation of a crop insurance scheme, which they believe will provide much-needed relief and financial security. However, with no concrete steps taken so far, their concerns continue to grow.MLA Shabir Ahmad Kullay has called upon the administration to take immediate action, stating that further delays could worsen the crisis for farmers. He emphasized that the government must prioritize the crop insurance scheme to ensure that apple growers do not suffer year after year due to extreme weather conditions.Farmers and agricultural experts also argue that crop insurance is essential for the sustainability of apple farming in Jammu and Kashmir. They urge the authorities to deliver on their election promises and introduce policies that provide stability to the region’s agricultural sector.

With apple farming being a key contributor to the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, all eyes are now on the government to see whether they will take the necessary steps to protect farmers from financial ruin.
