Several villages in the Shopian district have suffered extensive damage due to a severe hailstorm accompanied by strong winds, causing a complete loss of apple crops just 15 days to a month before the anticipated harvest. Farmers in the affected regions, including Ratnipora, Dangam, Wangam, and their adjacent areas, reported witnessing such extreme weather for the first time. Locals described the scene as devastating, with winds and hailstorms knocking down all the apples from the trees, leading to a 100% loss of the crop.
The affected farmers now face significant financial challenges as they grapple with the complete destruction of their produce, which was on the verge of being harvested.
Meanwhile DDC Cheirperson shopian Bilkeesa Akhter raised concerns about the significant damage caused to apple crops by the hailstorms. He called upon the government to provide fair compensation to the affected apple farmers and stressed the urgent need for implementing a comprehensive crop insurance scheme to protect the livelihoods of these farmers.
